Anyone who has read the Bible knows that Jesus healed people because of their faith in him and God. That includes people who were described as demoniacs or possessed by demons. Modern scholars believe that some of these people who were thought to be possessed were simply people living with mental illnesses.
Fast forward to today. The conversation around mental illness, including depression and anxiety, is changing. But the stigma around those who live with mental illness remains. And for people who are among the Christian faithful, it can be easy to think that God is punishing them or that Jesus doesn't care about them. Nothing can be further from the truth. Yes, there is suffering in life. And no, faith doesn't mean that if you believe, God or Jesus will take your suffering away with a wave of the hand.
However, faith can also be an amazing part of recovery. Through the support of friends and family and belief in oneself, God can indeed lift you up, if you let Him into your life. That is what we believe.
A wise spiritual leader once said, "God helps those who help themselves." That is why we are here. Through the actions of our faith communities, we want to help. Through faith, we want you to be well.
